Masini McDermott was born and raised in Toronto Ontario by a single mother of West Indian Caribbean decent. Her musical journey started at a very young age. Singing in the Church choir at three years old, started her off on a life long journey.

It wasn’t until, high school that she realized, Musical Theatre was a potential career path. Attending Wexford Collegiate School of The Arts, studying in the Musical Theatre program being apart of shows like; Rent, Music Man and Hairspray to name a few. Also, performing in places like; The Sony Centre, CBC Radio and Exhibition place, allowed Masini to discover a variety of possibilities in the arts this young girl did not know existed. Once graduated high school, she was accepted into Sheridan College’s Bachelor of Musical Theatre Performance program and attended the program for a year. After the year was completed, she decided to take a break from Theatre and performing. Which lead her to study Hospitality Tourism and Leisure at George Brown College. 

After a year into the program, the urge to start performing became stronger than ever. Performing in small gigs around the city, cast in Fringe Festival shows with Edge of The Sky Theatre in Summerland, True North Mixtape and The Fence. After a few years of performing, she booked her first international job on Disney Cruise Line hanging out with amazing characters like Rafiki, Calliope (the muse from Hercules) and performed alongside many different actors and dancers from across the globe. She then moved onto being a part of the Award winning Canadian premiere, The Color Purple in Halifax Nova Scotia, at Neptune Theatre and in later months, Citadel Theatre in Edmonton Alberta and Royal Manitoba Theatre in Winnipeg Manitoba.

Since the COVID-19 shutdown putting an end to her debut as Alexis in Grow the Musical at The Grand Theatre, she has become the Co-Founder of Musical Tokens. Alongside Tara Jackson, their online platform works to create and empower womxn of colour in the Canadian Musical Theatre Industry. Highlighting, educating and uplifting a vast variety of talent on and off the stage.
